What
we do
Our 18 years of work with
environmental stakeholders is based on a simple philosophy:
"never to impose, but to propose"; to search
for solutions together, and work together to achieve them.
Through hands-on activities we create the settings in which
people can learn how the marine and coastal environments are
being negatively impacted by human activities as well as how they can develop
and implement
solutions to the problems they find. In the end, it is
the stakeholders who will decide whether or not to implement
an action and, more importantly, whether or not it will
succeed.
FoProBiM's
objectives include: (i) raising awareness concerning needed
changes in regulations and attitudes concerning the
environment in general and the marine environment in
particular; (ii) increasing knowledge and capabilities at
the government, community and individual levels in order to
make sustainable improvements in the coastal and marine
environment and the lives of people, and (iii) to conduct
educational programs as well as scientific research,
including environmental monitoring, in order to promote a
better understanding, and through this, the improved management
and sustainable use
of resources.
In its ongoing efforts to monitor and
protect Haiti’s marine environment, FoProBiM works with
coastal area inhabitants including farmers, fishers
(fishermen and fisherwomen) and those making use of coastal
and marine environments through a wide variety of sectors
such as tourism, transportation, marketing, sea-food processing,
etc. Currently we are capable of providing various types of
expertise including project design, management, and
execution in the fields of education, advocacy, scientific,
and technical training and support.
FoProBiM works in collaboration with peer organizations
throughout the world to promote wise use and conservation
of fisheries, mangrove forests, and corals, and to deal with concerns about pollution
and sedimentation issues affecting the coastal and marine
zones. We also collaborate with many international
organizations, such as the
United Nations Environment
Program (UNEP), the
United Nations Development Program (UNDP),
the
Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN), the
United States
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the
United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the Haitian
Ministry of Environment,
the
UNESCO program for Development in Coastal regions and
Small Islands
(UNESCO/CSI) among many others.
As well as being Haiti's only member of
IUCN - The World Conservation
Union FoProBiM is also a Caribbean focal point
for the
World Commission on Protected Areas
- Marine.
FoProBiM also organizes
beach cleanups involving volunteers and diverse institutions in the private
sector to learn the origins of marine debris and to reduce
the damage to coastal systems and tourism revenues that
results when man-made debris enters the marine environment.
We also monitor Haiti's marine environment by tracking
events such as jellyfish blooms and coral bleaching, and
maintain information on the status of manatees, sea turtles,
mangroves and coral reefs.

Legal Status
FoProBiM is a Haitian non-governmental, non-profit,
a-political organization headquartered in Port-au-Prince,
officially recognized by the Haitian government on March 7,
1995 as a foundation working on Haiti’s environment in
general and on coastal and marine zones in particular in the
areas of sustainable development, education, research, and
monitoring.
