What we do

Our work with environmental stakeholders is based on a simple philosophy: "never to impose, but to propose"; to search for solutions together, and work together to achieve them.  Through hands-on activities we create the settings in which people can learn how the marine and coastal environments are being negatively impacted, as well as how they can develop solutions to the problems they find.

FoProBiM's objectives include: (i) raising awareness concerning needed changes in  regulations and attitudes concerning the environment in general and the marine environment in particular; (ii) increasing knowledge and capabilities at the government, community and individual levels in order to make sustainable improvements in the coastal and marine environment and the lives of people, and (iii) to conduct educational programs as well as scientific research, including environmental monitoring, in order to promote a better understanding, and through this, improved management of resources.

In its ongoing efforts to monitor and protect Haiti’s marine environment, FoProBiM works with coastal area inhabitants including farmers, fishers (fishermen and fisherwomen) and those making use of coastal and marine environments through a wide variety of sectors such as tourism, transportation, marketing, processing, etc.  Currently it is capable of providing various types of expertise including project design, management, and execution in the fields of education, advocacy, scientific, and technical training and support.

FoProBiM works in collaboration with peer organizations in neighboring Caribbean countries, such as the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, to promote wise use and conservation of shared resources, including straddling stocks and migratory species, and to deal with concerns about pollution issues.  We also collaborate with international organizations, such as the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science at Conservation International, the UNESCO program for Development in Coastal regions and Small Islands (UNESCO/CSI), the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), ReefCheck, the Whitley Fund for Nature, the Ocean Conservancy, and the CARICOMP network.  As well as being Haiti's only member of the IUCN - The World Conservation Union FoProBiM is also a Caribbean focal point for the World Commission on Protected Areas.

In partnership with one of our Jamaican partners, the Caribbean Coastal Area Management Foundation (CCAM), FoProBiM developed an exchange of Jamaican and Haitian fishers in order to help each other develop a grass-roots approach to improved fishery management both at home and for the region.

The Foundation organizes beach clean-ups involving volunteers and diverse institutions in the private sector to learn the origins of marine debris and to reduce the damage to coastal systems and tourism revenues that results when man-made debris enters the marine environment.  We also monitor Haiti's marine environment by tracking events such as jellyfish blooms and coral bleaching, and we maintain information on the status of manatees, sea turtles, mangroves and coral reefs.
